These post caps are comprised of 6 pieces, laminated together.

Post caps should be 3/16" larger than the posts.

The core is cut from 2x8 with a skilsaw or tablesaw, then the top sanded
for a tapered appearance to add some style.

The cap block is cut from 1x4 to a 3 1/2 x 3 1/2 x 3/4" block.

The lower trim is cut from 3/4" or 7/8" stock on a table saw.
A 1 1/4 x 3/4" pine shingle mould trim can be substituted.

Glue all connected surfaces then nail together in place.

After stain is applied, caulk all joints to prevent moisture entering.

Item 3       Headpiece Construction, additional tips.

Cut all posts off level and mount the 4 corner posts.

Install post caps, then simply assemble the headpiece and install.

Temporary supports can be fastened to the short posts so that the arches can be cut and placed to mark the notch.
