Architectural Woodwork Design is one of the most challenging but also an enduring part of architecture. Ask your local architect if you don't believe us. Woodwork detailing has become something of a lost art. This is likely what prompted Winterburn to study it.  

Unfortunatelly there is no such course to be had specializing in woodwork design. Architectural training touches on it, however they prompt students to study detailing outlined in design references. Nothing wrong with reproducing, however when the reproduction fits poorly with the project, you are bound to keep changing things to make the feature fit.

Landscape architecture courses devote very little time to woodwork detailing. There is simply not space in the carriculum. So many plants, so many principles. Woodwork is a complex and intriguing art.

Fees and Rates 

If it is based on one of our standard garden structure plans, which needs only to be scaled and sized to fit the building or yard, the charge is normally between $75 and $300 U.S. (Made to Order)

If you would like us to create a garden structure plan for you to build, which we would retain the copyright to and be free to release through Gardenstructure.com at any time, at our discretion, the charge is normally between $500-1000 U.S. (New Plan)

If you would like a plan guaranteed to be released only to you, and, or for you, to use for your own purposes it would obviously be much more costly. (One of a kind) and is typically based on a bid or hourly rate.

This is a project created in collaboration with Elisabeth Tschoppe Garden Designs in Toronto Canada. The garden designer approached us with concept sketches showing us what she envisioned in draft concept details. We put wood work details to those drawings and designed 2 trompe l'oeil panels, knee brace and rafter size and cuts, flashing atop posts, blind mortise and tennon gates carried only by hardwood dowels with keyless entry, trelliswork details, secret pool equipment storage with sound dampening and trelliswork, and even worked in drip edges to shed water away from crucial joints for durability. In 2 places what appears to be simple trelliswork actually is a hidden gate. In all the posts have 38 pieces of timber and there are some 60 posts in all.

A project of this scale will entail design fees in the $3000-5000 range.

This design was created to bring new life to an existing deck by adding a pergola and trellis work. The pergola was designed to blend with the home and to be mounted atop the existing deck. Pergola designs of this scope will run in the $1200-2000 range.

This inspired cedar gate design was created to give a proper facade to the street. It is flanked by a very normal looking garage. There is trelliswork and decorative fencing in the rest of the yard which is more simple in design than the gates, however the client opted to put her best side forward. We think it worked out very well indeed.

To design a custom gate normally runs in the 250-$750.00 range.
