This original pergola project included 70 clad support columns and looked very different prior to the stain application.Planting pockets were installed in the patio to enable lush plantings.

This is the original project in Toronto after stain was applied. Roughly 5 years old the vines were training nicely through this Rosedale Garden. This pergola was originally conceived by Elizabeth Tschopp Garden Designs, and the pergolas, trelliswork and gates detailing and working drawings were by Lawrence Winterburn, (GardenStructure.com). This yard looked like a junk yard when we arrived. The pool was installed, then our footings, and then the patios and coping went in on the pool. We even built a sound dampening enclosure for the pool heater and pump, which has a gate for access. The pergola plans for this location covered about 2500 square feet of patio. Some areas of the pergola were left more open for a courtyard like effect.

As you can see, this pergola looks very refined in white. Much lighter and graceful looking. The red flowering plants play very well against the white pergola backdrop. Take a look at the trims on this pergola done in white--they show off the detail by accenting the trims in shadow lines. The trelliswork also casts shadow lines which work even better when draped in greenery and flowering shrubs.


Here is a pergola built from our T005 pergola plans in Florida. When it comes to building pergolas with patios and planters it is necessary to install the footings before the hardscape to avoid extra work. Dark colors do hide some of the details, however pergolas in these shades tend to take on a patina that resembles iron. This pergola colour works well with the hardscape and the loss of detail works when augmented by these beautiful retaining walls and fountains.


These adaptable pergola plans can be arranged in any number of layouts and connected utilizing the details in the plans. Choose the locations for support posts, and refer to the photos for inspiration. The details included in the plans will give you many insights on level changes, connecting to walls and even different densities of trelliswork, and even offer suggestions as to where to put the trellises. There are also two post cladding details, one starts with a 4x4 post, and gets clad out to create a raised panel effect. The other starts with a 6x6 post, (stronger for Florida), and just gets surface trim. In areas where seismic or hurricane events are likely to happen you will need to add hurricane clips-- Your local engineer will appreciate the robust details in this pergola plan.
