These
plans allow you to build a pergola of any size. It looks different when
you stain it in different colors so click the link above to see more.
You choose the size for your pergola and mount the support posts where
you see fit in a perpendicular way. Typically you should place the
support posts not more than 12' apart for the specifications in the
plans. If you want to go to longer spans you can increase the size of
the beams. The amount of size increase depends on the size of span,
local wind conditions, and sometimes local bylaws. When you build a
pergola in Florida or any Hurricane prone zone you need to install
hurricane clips and have the structure engineered locally. Most
engineers are pleased to work from this plan since it is so robustly
designed. Once you have decided on post locations, you
install the pergola posts and clad them using the details included in
the plans. We give you full size templates in the printed plan version
so that you can make a hard copy of the template.
You
can build this pergola with 4 posts, 6' by 6', or you can have hundreds
of posts supporting an area of shade the size of a football
field. It all depends on your budget. This pergola is best suited to
Western Red Cedar Lumber, however clients have sent us photos of
projects built using these pergolas plans of pressure treated, cypress
and even Ipe. Normally, when people build this pergola and intend to do
it a solid color they choose Red Cedar Lumber, since the knots don't
bleed as much as pine, and the stain tends to bond better. Check our
stain guide for more information about Stain Application for
durability. We typically get 5-7 years durability using our
specifications.

is another pergola plan that is very suitable to any wind condition
found in the United States. The large braces and substantial posts in
this pergola allow you to resist winds very well. For this reason it is
often used as a basis for pergolas that need engineering in states like
Florida. This pergola was designed for a turn of the century home and
utilizes readily available trim profiles and sculpted lattice panels to
facilitate climbing vines. From the details in the plans you
or your builder should be able to adapt to many different sizes of
pergola--from 4 columns 14'x 14' to 5 sections and 60' long. Everyone
has differing tastes in color, or would like the color to match
adjacent structures. Each column is a single footing, however 2 posts
are mounted in each hole. You may decide to do a square pergola and use
3 posts per corner so that it looks the same from all angles.
These
are professional level pergola plans so the builder should be
experienced in trim work and a pneumatic finish nailer will help get
the job done more quickly.

Classical Southern Pergola was often called a lath house. This is a do
it yourself, step by step plan with cut and materials lists. The
standard unit measures 7' x 9' and has optional moulded benches that
are as comfortable as they are attractive. Though this is classified a
do it yourself plan, it does involve accurate cutting and plenty of
sanding for good results. Large laminated beams frame the walkway and
many people will place this pergola over a pathway in the garden. The
printed plans come with a template to mark the curved pieces before
gluing. You will need quite a few clamps, a jigsaw, and a tablesaw and
a belt sander to put this pergola together. There are plans for
a 12' long version coming in spring 2012. These
pergola plans are available through Lee Valley Tools, in store and on
line as well. Due to the full size templates required to build this
pergola, downloadable plans are not available at this time.

pergola plan has 2 options for columns, square or turned. It is
designed for temporary or permanent mounting. This pergola is a fine
choice for weddings and events. The simple headpiece construction makes
this structure easily erected in a day. It is easily adaptable for up
to 16' in length. Even if set up temporarily, the footprint of the
posts makes it fairly resistent to wind. It will take no special talent
or skill to build this pergola. A jigsaw and a screw gun will be the
most complicated tools you will need.

is our most simple Pergola with Trelliswork. The pergola can be built
4'x4' up to 10'x10' and where you put the trellis screens is entirely
up to you. The plans show you how to change the density of the screens
for more privacy or a more open look. The layout in the image shows a
screen hiding an air conditioning unit. The plans also
include details to build a gate that looks just like the trelliswork.
The plans show you how to make a simple decorative post cap as well.
These pergola plans are suitable for building with Pressure treated,
red cedar or any other outdoor suitable wood.

deck plan contains layouts, elevations and sections that are typically
required to aquire permits for decks. It features the details for the
attached pergola with trellis panels, as well as the box steps and
custom hand rail. The deck is roughly 12x16' and the stairs
project out. The pergola leaves an open, courtyard type of section in
the middle so that it didn't make the den dark. The large window still
has plenty of light. This pergola is also a good fit for our Pergola
Awning to give you a dry area even on rainy days. The trelliswork is
simple to adapt to more or less dense, and the rails are easily
adaptable to different heights.

is a very simple pergola design that you can create any number of
inspired layouts with. We used it in Home Shows in the Toronto area for
3 or 4 years. This arrangement was at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto
as the West Entrance. It featured 18' spans for people to flow freely
through the gates.

10 x 10' arrangment was in a mall display as a prelude to Blooms.
Without rafters you can build using the stock details up to about a 14'
span. The trelliswork screens can be made more dense easily, or mix up
the spacing to change the pattern. As with all our plans full size
templates are included in the printed versions. This plan can be used
to create an arched entry, a free standing pergola, a courtyard
pergola, or even a large gallery type of pergola. Mount the posts in 3
or 4 post arrangments and repeat the pattern using the details
provided.

Pergola was designed for Sarah Richardson when she was a designer for
Style at Home Magazine. (Before she was Famous!).
This
fairly detailed pergola features tapered 6x6 posts, decorative screens
and a decorative peak. Sarah propped this stage with the dining set,
chandelier and plant materials. A few hours before this photo this was
a grass yard. This is a pergola that will take some skill to
accomplish, plenty of sanding and you should be a fairly experienced
carpenter, (or plan to hire one), to build it with the columns you see
here. You can always simplify and just use 4x4 posts as supports.

called the Tunnel Pergola, it creates a gallery to train vines over in
a narrow side yard, or at the back of a yard. Roughly 42"
wide and as long as you like. (typically 4' sections). We used the gate
found in F002 DIY at the street side. The most complicated tools you
will need is a jig saw and belt sander. The pergola in the photo was
made of Pressure Treated materials. If you use Red Cedar you won't have
to stain as often.

pergola plans include details for the deck and the designs include
details to anchor the pergola into an existing or new deck. Our
compression hardware (details included), make this pergola stable
without angular braces. You can use exterior grade exterior columns, or
any structural columns that you like the look of. The bulky looking
beams do include laminating two members together, so we would suggest
you need some woodwork experience to build this pergola.

substantial posts give this pergola the strength to resist wind. The
stock plan is roughly 20' x 10' and requires special order lumber to
achieve the large solid beams. A more simple alternative detail using
stock lumber is included in the plans. The large posts are routered in
the photo, however you can always just leave the posts straight for a
more simple look. The trims are simple table saw cuts but really set
the whole structure off. Please keep in mind that there is 9'
between the ground and the underside of the beams, making it too large
for many residential yards. You certainly need space to build a pergola
of this scale.

There
are 3 different details for the support columns included in these
pergola plans. The first, shown above, uses plywood to make the large
footprint stable enough to withstand 60 mph wind without fastening to
the ground. It comes apart easily into 3 very sturdy pieces
and stack well in a pickup truck. The stock structure allows for
roughly an 8' by 7' opening within--which works well for photographers
at weddings and events to frame a picture beautifully.
The
second option is turned columns, and the third is upon 6x6 posts that
are anchored into the ground. This project involves
laminating (gluing pieces of wood together), to create the thick
overhead beams.

Deck with Dining
Pergola Plans D181 PRO

For

rather large deck with pergola plan includes details for the
skirting, custom rails, planter supports, wide staircase and pergola.
You can use the details to build a deck of any shape you like. Many
clients would prefer to have us alter the working drawings to fit their
home more precisely, and that is normally done for $300.00.
This deck is of an irregular shape and roughly 800 square
feet in size. The original deck and pergola were built of Western Red
Cedar, however you could use Pressure Treated materials or anything
else that is outdoor suitable. The difference between PT and Cedar is
that the knots will bleed sap through the finish when you use PT. Cedar
is also known to accept and hold stain better.
